Carrara White - Platinum Grey Tumbled Marble Hexagon Mosaic Tile 48x48

Scale changes what the grey pieces do. Spread across larger hexagons they arrive as distinct incidents, one dark tile among several pale ones, rather than dissolving into an overall speckle the way they do at the smaller size. It follows that the sheet wants room. In a cloakroom floor of two square metres the contrast can feel restless; across a full bathroom it settles into rhythm.

Tumbling is the second decision. The process rounds each hexagon and abrades the face, leaving a lightly frosted matte surface with none of the flat reflectivity of a sawn marble tile, and it softens the step between white and grey so the darker pieces sit within the floor rather than on top of it. The eased edges also read as a slightly wider joint, which suits the larger chip.

Carrara is a calcitic marble and etches where acids reach it. Tumbled marble shows this far less than polished marble does, because the surface is already broken and a dulled patch has nowhere to stand out against, which makes it a forgiving specification for a family bathroom. An impregnating sealer before grouting remains the correct step.
