Joint length is the reason. A one-inch hexagon puts roughly twice the grout line into a square metre that a two-inch one does, and grout lines are where a wet floor finds its grip. This is why the one-inch honeycomb has been the default in bathrooms and shower bases for more than a century: the pattern survived because it works underfoot, not because it is charming. The same density lets a sheet bend over a shower former or up a curved bath panel without being cut into strips.

At this size the two marbles stop reading as separate pieces. From standing height the grey and the white resolve into a single soft speckle rather than a pattern of light and dark tiles, an effect closer to terrazzo than to a chequerboard. That makes it a quiet floor, which is usually the intention when it is paired with a larger format on the walls.

Tumbling rounds each small hexagon and leaves a lightly frosted face. On a piece this size the eased edges account for a noticeable share of the visible surface, and that is what gives the sheet its worn, hand-set look. Seal before grouting.
