Shellstone Brushed Limestone - Rustic Tumbled Travertine Hexagon Mosaic Tiles

Shellstone earns its name. It is a fossiliferous limestone formed from accumulated shell fragments, and on a cut face those fragments show as pale flecks and small curved sections through the body of the stone. No two hexagons carry the same fossil content, which gives the sheet a fine-grained variation that a plain limestone cannot produce. The travertine pieces bring the opposite quality, banded and open-pored and warmer in tone, so the sheet reads as a gathering of related stones rather than as one quarried product.

The mixed treatment is what makes it cohere. The tumbled travertine has rounded edges and a broken face; the shellstone is brushed, abraded with wire rather than by rolling, which textures the surface while leaving the edge more defined. Side by side the two catch light differently, and that difference animates the surface more than colour alone would.

Both stones are calcareous and absorbent, the travertine more so. Seal before grouting: with this much open texture, grout pigment finds every pore, and a dark joint on unsealed stone is very difficult to put right afterwards. It suits bathroom floors, wet rooms and walls where a heavily textural surface is wanted.
