Fan and scallop mosaic tiles

The fan — also sold as scallop or fish scale — is a curved chip laid in overlapping rows. It is the shape that most obviously announces itself, which is why it tends to be specified for one surface rather than a whole room: a shower end, a splashback, the face of a bar or a reception desk.

We cut it in honed limestone and marble, including two-tone versions where a Rustic Green or Creamy Beige outline traces each fan. Curves make the perimeter the fiddly part, so allow more wastage than you would on a hexagon, and set the most visible row out first so the fans finish whole where the eye lands.
