Shellstone Split Face Limestone Ledger Panel

Travertine was laid down in distinct layers with cavities between them, so when it splits it tends to part along those beds and leave a face that is stepped, layered and quite deeply irregular. Limestone is a denser, more homogeneous sediment without that internal structure, so it breaks to a finer and more even relief, with shallower variation between crest and hollow. The result is a wall with genuine texture but a calmer profile: less quarry face, more hand-worked surface.

The colour supports that reading. This stone runs through soft alabaster, off-white and pale ivory with very little tonal variation, so the shadows do all the drawing and no colour movement competes with them. It is the most restrained of the split face panels and the one that sits most comfortably in a room that is otherwise plain.

The material is also traded as Myra limestone; the two names describe the same stone, which is worth knowing when comparing quotations. As with any split face, this is wall cladding. Limestone is porous and calcareous, so seal it and clean with neutral products only.
