Carrara White Tumbled Marble Hexagon Mosaic Tile 48x48
Two-inch Carrara hexagons, tumbled. Same size and same stone as the honed version, and setting the two beside each other is the clearest illustration of what tumbling actually does.
Rolling the pieces with abrasive removes the sawn surface and rounds every edge, and three things follow. The grey veining lightens, because an abraded face scatters light instead of reflecting it evenly, so the sheet reads whiter and calmer than a honed one cut from the same block. The eased edges widen the apparent joint, which strengthens the honeycomb geometry seen from standing height. And the surface gains a fine tooth that a level face does not have.
The third of those carries a practical consequence. A tumbled sheet is far more forgiving of an imperfect substrate: where a honed mosaic reveals any step between sheets as a bright line under raking light, a broken surface simply absorbs the same discrepancy. On an older floor that cannot be brought perfectly flat, this is the version to specify.
The broken texture disguises etching too. Carrara is calcium carbonate and reacts with acid whatever the finish, but on a tumbled face the resulting dull patch has no gloss to contrast against and is frequently invisible. Combined with the joint density of a two-inch honeycomb, it makes an unusually tolerant floor for a family bathroom. Seal before grouting.
