Onyx Honed Marble Brick Mosaic Tiles

Onyx cut into small rectangles, laid in a running bond and honed. The first thing worth saying is that onyx is not a marble, whatever the trade habit of grouping the two: it is a banded calcite deposited layer upon layer by mineral-rich water, closer in origin to travertine than to a metamorphic stone.

What makes it unlike anything else in the catalogue is that it is translucent. Light does not stop at the surface. It enters the stone, travels a short distance and comes back out, which is why onyx appears lit from within even under ordinary room lighting. Backlighting a panel takes that much further, and it is the reason onyx is specified for bar fronts, reception desks and shower niches far more often than for floors.

The banding is the second attraction. Milky chalcedony, pale celadon green, warm amber and honey run in parallel layers laid down over a very long period, and cutting the stone into small bricks means each piece shows a different position in that sequence.

Honing rather than polishing is deliberate. A mirror finish adds a surface reflection that competes with the light coming from inside the stone, and the translucency is the quality worth protecting. Onyx is soft and calcareous: seal it, and keep it away from busy floors.
