Calacatta Sugar Honed Marble Wall & Floor Tiles
Calacatta Sugar in a large rectangular format, honed. The catalogue offers this stone as a mosaic in several sizes and finishes, but the tile is the format the marble was formed for, and the difference is not subtle.
Calacatta Sugar's character is its veining: long ribbons of gold, amber and dove grey sweeping across a creamy white ground. Those ribbons are measured in tens of centimetres. Cut into a mosaic they survive only as fragments and the stone becomes a warm speckle. At tile size a single piece carries a whole passage of vein, and several tiles laid together carry the movement across a wall as one continuous gesture. That is what people mean when they talk about Calacatta.
It follows that layout is not optional. Tiles should be unpacked, set out dry and arranged so the veining runs where it is wanted, with the strongest pieces held back for whatever the eye lands on first. Fitting straight from the box wastes the stone.
Honing keeps the gold true and stops reflections breaking the ribbons up. It is a calcitic marble, so acid contact leaves a dull etch that no sealer prevents, and the gold veining is the softest part of the surface. Neutral cleaning products only, and a sealer applied before grouting.
