Calacatta Sugar Tumbled Marble Brick Mosaic Tiles

The same Calacatta Sugar brick mosaic, tumbled. Where the polished version sharpens the stone and the honed one holds it level, tumbling deliberately softens everything about it, and on a marble this strongly veined that turns out to be a useful thing to be able to do.

Rolling the pieces with abrasive wears the surface back and rounds every end and edge. On the gold veining the effect is to lift a little of the colour and diffuse the rest, so what were ribbons on a polished face become a warm blush across the sheet. The stone stops announcing itself and settles into being a quietly golden surface, which is exactly what is wanted when the marble is a background for something else in the room rather than its subject.

The rounded ends change the geometry as well. Each rectangle loses its sharp corner, so the joint between pieces reads wider and softer and the running bond takes on the irregularity of something laid a long time ago. Period bathrooms and older houses accept this far more readily than they accept a crisply sawn mosaic.

It is also the most practical of the three finishes. A broken surface disguises both the etching that acids cause on any calcitic marble and the fine scratching that a used surface collects. Seal before grouting all the same.
