Calacatta Sugar Tumbled Marble Hexagon Mosaic Tile
Calacatta Sugar in one-inch hexagons, tumbled. At this size the stone behaves quite differently from the way it does in larger formats, and it is worth being clear about which effect you are buying.
Calacatta's value normally lies in its veining, in long amber and gold passages travelling across a pale ground. A 23 mm hexagon is smaller than the spacing between those veins, so instead of carrying movement each piece carries a fragment: a stroke of gold on one, a clean cream face on the next, an ochre edge somewhere else. Across a sheet the result is a warm, softly speckled field rather than a figured marble, and it reads much closer to terrazzo than to a slab of Calacatta.
Tumbling takes that a step further, frosting each face and easing every corner, which mutes the brightest gold and draws the whole surface into a single warm tone. The sheet becomes something noticed for its colour temperature rather than for its pattern.
It makes a strong small-room floor. The joint density in a one-inch honeycomb gives real footing underfoot, and the broken tumbled face disguises both wear and the etching acids leave on any calcitic marble. The gold veining is the softest part of the stone, so keep it away from a threshold in constant use. Seal before grouting.
