Calacatta Sugar Tumbled Marble Hexagon Mosaic Tiles

Calacatta Sugar cut into two-inch hexagons and tumbled: a soft cream ground crossed by veins of amber, ochre and warm gold. Among the Calacatta marbles this is the warm one, and the tumbled finish is what keeps that warmth from turning ostentatious.

The name describes the surface. Tumbling leaves a fine granular texture across the face, and on this stone the effect is close to caster sugar, where light sits in the surface instead of reflecting off it. That texture also mutes the veining a little, which matters, because at hexagon scale a strongly figured marble can easily look busy. The veins survive as movement across the whole sheet rather than as a separate statement on every piece.

Because the veining is directional and the hexagons are cut from across the block, laying straight from the box gives an unresolved result. Dry-lay several sheets first and turn pieces until the vein direction reads as a field; the distance between a considered Calacatta floor and a chaotic one lies almost entirely in that step.

The gold veins are the softest part of the stone and the first place a tumbled surface shows wear, so this suits bathroom floors, walls and splashbacks better than an entrance in daily use. Like all Calacatta it is calcitic and will etch where acids reach it, though a broken tumbled face disguises etching far better than a polished one does.
